The SWP Difference

â–¬

1-1/2″ Bevel Profile — 11/16″ Thick

The wide 1-1/2" bevel creates bold architectural shadow lines at standard plank thickness. The wider pitch creates fewer, more emphatic shadow lines per panel — a strong, graphic surface presence.

↔

Pairs with Tambour

Every SWP profile corresponds directly to a Tambour variant. Mixing flat walls with curved surfaces in the same space? Run SWP on the flat sections and Tambour on the curves — same profile, same species, same finish. Seamless.

🌲

5 Species Available

Choose from Poplar, Red Oak, Maple, Walnut, and White Oak — all premium North American hardwoods. Poplar takes paint beautifully and is our most economical species. Oak, Maple, Walnut, and White Oak are ideal for stained applications.

🎨

Finish Your Way

Panels arrive sanded and ready for staining or painting. Pre-finishing the back face before installation is recommended — it equalizes moisture absorption and reduces the risk of cupping over time.

Storage, Handling & Acclimation

Acclimate First — Always

On receipt, store flat in a controlled interior environment. Allow a minimum of 48 hours to acclimate before finishing or installing. Stack with spacers between planks for air circulation. Solid tongue and groove panels are sensitive to moisture — acclimation ensures dimensional stability and reduces the risk of gapping or cupping after install.

Interior Use Only — Does Not Flex

SWP panels are solid hardwood tongue and groove — they will not bend around curves or corners. For curved surfaces, use the corresponding Tambour flexible panel in the same profile. SWP is not suitable for wet or high-humidity environments.

Step by Step

1

Prep the Surface

Wall or substrate must be clean, flat, dry, and structurally sound. Tongue and groove panels require a solid, even substrate — check for high and low spots before you start.

2

Acclimate — 48 Hours Minimum

Never skip acclimation. Stack planks with spacers in the installation room for at least 48 hours. Check moisture content if a meter is available — target 6–9% MC.

3

Pre-Finish the Back (Recommended)

Apply a sealer coat to the back face before installation. This equalizes moisture absorption on both faces and significantly reduces the risk of cupping — especially important for painted applications.

4

Apply Adhesive & Nail

Use a quality construction adhesive in continuous beads — perimeter first, then horizontal runs every 6″. Supplement with 15- or 16-gauge finish nails or brad nails through the tongue at each framing member.

5

Leave Expansion Gaps

Leave 1/16″ between adjacent planks and a 1/8″ gap at all perimeter edges. Solid wood moves across the grain seasonally — these gaps are not optional.

6

Finish After Install

Fill nail holes, sand lightly across all planks, then apply your chosen stain, paint, or clear finish. Apply in thin, even coats and allow full dry time between coats.

Pro Tips

Check Your Moisture

High MC at install means shrinkage gaps later. Low MC means potential swelling and buckling. Target 6–9% before you nail anything down — a moisture meter is cheap insurance on a custom hardwood install.

Mix Planks from Multiple Bundles

Natural hardwood varies in color and grain. Pulling from several bundles and mixing planks as you work prevents banding — where one bundle's color is concentrated in one area of the wall.

Combine with Tambour on Curves

SWP on flat surfaces, Tambour on curved or radius surfaces — same profile, same species, same finish. Plan your layout before you start so the two materials meet cleanly at the transition.

Made to Order — Lead Time & Minimums

SWP panels are made to order in your chosen species. Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks from order confirmation. Minimum order is 21 pieces per species. For larger quantities, custom lengths, or project-specific requirements, contact White River Hardwoods for a tailored quote and timeline.
